INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 1 -  Game Design Document (GDD)

We are required to design and create their own 2D side scrolling/platformer game. The game design document serves as a blueprint for the game, containing all the necessary information and visual references to facilitate its development.

Group Members:

  • Kong Ga Wai (0359692) - [Me]
  • Tracy Angeline Tio (0362222)
  • Velicia Raquel Dewi Setiawan (0369188)

Individual Game Idea

We decided that we each think of our own game story idea and then present it to each other to pick which story we will be picking for the final. My idea for this task is "Out Of My Way".

"Out Of My Way" is a 2D platformer game where players have to platform through the semi-destroyed facility and avoid the dangers. Players will be running into abnormalities that will block their way and have to knock them out (attacking them).

The objective of the player is to find the exit to escape by platforming on the destroyed part of the facility, dodge the dangers, and knock out any abnormalities blocking their way (Probably going to have one per stage near the end). Their goal is to reach the bottom floor from the top. The lower the floor they are the more dangerous it will be.

The concept and story details for the game, along with my group members' ideas are in the file below:

GDD 3 Preliminary Ideas

After presenting our idea and receiving feedback from the lecturer, we ended up combining both the idea from Velicia's gameplay and my story and mechanics.

Finalised Idea - Project Left Forgotten

(Jump To Full Detail GDD)

Concept and Purpose

After some brainstorming, I came up with a new story for the game, and as a group we also discussed on the game play mechanics.

Game Overview:

Project Left Forgotten is a 2D Platform Game Where you play as Maythem, an AI that is stuck in a creator’s unfinished game. Your goal is to explore the place, find a way to exit the game, and restore the game's forgotten pieces. Along the way, you discover a unique ability: you can render environments and bring incomplete NPCs and enemies to life, shaping the world as you go.

Storyline:

Maythem is an AI that exists in the digital world of his creator’s device. One day, he finds himself trapped in an unfinished game, unable to leave. As he explores, he will find a lot of unfinished assets of the NPC, Enemies, and Objects that some he can’t interact with. When attempting to attack the enemies, he finds out that it ‘completes’ their design, and thus his objective is set. He has to ‘complete’ the missing assets and details of the unfinished game to find the exit to this unfinished game.

Depending on how much he had ‘completed’ the unfinished game, the ending will differ. It is up to him to decide the fate of this project that had been left forgotten.

Game Objective:

As Maythem, an AI trapped in an abandoned and unfinished game world, your objective is to restore the broken digital environment by completing fragmented enemies, NPCs, and objects scattered throughout the game. In the middle until end of the game, you’re gonna discover a generator that there’s a puzzle inside you need to solve to finish the gameplay and defeat the boss.

Game Design

I thought about the environment and level design. The environment is a run-down facility that contains abnormalities. This is heavily inspired by a game I like: Lobotomy Corporation

Game Level Design:

The player wakes up as Maythem and learns the basic controls (walk, jump, attack, interact, etc) while navigating a digital space that is still unfinished. Once Maythem moves forward, he meets the NPC that can be interacted with and gives a clue about the enemy and the current condition. When discover the enemy, he discovers an ability to color its enemy and solving the puzzle in the generator can lead him to move to the next stage and even beat the final boss.

Goal:

  • Learn core mechanics at the beginning before moving forward.
  • Solve the puzzle by clicking the right button as instructed.
  • Interact with Objects and NPC.
  • Defeat the Enemies using color strike and reach the end of the game.

Objective & Challenges:

  • Avoid to getting damage from the enemies
  • Navigate and Explore the Stories
  • Choose the final ending based on how much we completed the unfinished project.

Character Design

Main Character:

Maythem (May)

Maythem is actually an original character of mine, he was created a long time ago and I decided to bring him into this game because why not?

  • May is the playable protagonist of the game.
  • He is an AI entity that roams freely within the Creator’s device and does whatever he wants with little to no limits.
  • He is considered a “virus” due to his ability to infiltrate and alter the device.
  • Emotionally detached on the surface, due to him being a literary program, but capable of showing/understanding small signs of care.

NPCs/ Minor Characters:

Creator (Minor Character)

  • The creator of the forgotten project and the owner of the device.
  • They would be anonymous, thus would not have a design or a name.
  • They are mentioned in the story often by Maythem. Maythem often curses them out for getting him stuck in their unfinished game.

Mao & Sildrate (NPCs)

Mao and Sildrate are also my original characters, they are more like a fandom original characters. Both of them are created as employees working in Lobotomy Corporation. Seeing that the game we are working on takes place at a facility, I just have to include them both in.

  • Mao and Sildrate can be interacted with by the player.
  • Both Mao and Sildrate are the captain of the department they work in.
  • When interacting with Mao, she will mention that a certain number of Enemy 1 had escaped, and it will then show the player the number of Enemy 1 the player had rendered.
  • When interacting with Sildrate, she will mention that a certain number of Enemy 2 had escaped, and it will then show the player the number of Enemy 2 the player had rendered.

Enemies:

The enemies in the game are inspired by the abnormalities from Lobotomy Corporation as well. Tracy did the sketch for Enemy 1 and 2 while I did the sketch for the Boss.
