Chosen Artwork: Manga Cover Illustration of Sakamoto Days |
One thing I love about the illustrations made by Yuto Suzuki is the way he uses colour and contrasts. It really makes an artwork pop out and just fun to look at. While going through the illustrations made by Yuto Suzuki, there are many that look amazing and it was hard to choose at first. I was close to choosing a magazine art but then I thought about it more, the thing that made me interested in his work was the manga. So I decide to use a cover illustration from one of his manga instead.
Looking through all the volume covers, they are so well drawn that it was hard to just pick one. I ended up picking this, Volume 3, as my final artwork. Despite being one of the earlier and simpler illustrations, there is so much to analyse on.

Analysis Draft |
When looking at the artwork, there is Contrast between the character, background, and plane, with the different saturations they are coloured in, along with the cold and warm colours used for the plane and the character’s clothes. With the way the character is posed and pointing the rifle toward the audience, it guides the eyes to follow them toward the character's face, then the series title behind him (Emphasis). The focus character is drawn with more detail and is larger than the background, creating a distance between the characters and the background. To the right, behind the focus character, there is Movement of a bird flying towards the character/the audience.
The Harmony can be seen in the background, building with different kinds of store elements aligned to create rows of storefronts continuing at the back, creating more depth to the illustration (Unity). The Gestalt Theory in the artwork includes proximity and continuation of the buildings, continuing to 'exist' outside the artwork and us being able to process that they are buildings like what can be seen in the artwork.

REFLECTION
• What have I learnt in this module?
In this module, I've learned about the basics of Design Principles and Elements of Design with how people use them in normal day-to-day stuff and in artworks, along with the phases in Visual Analysis from the lecture.
• What did I enjoy the most?
I enjoy creating the final design (task 3). It was fun and it pushed me out of my comfort zone to design something from the chosen artwork.
• What did I not enjoy the most?
Sketching. Perspective. (task 3). I struggled too much on that... If I remember right I think I spent half of the day trying to have the perspective to make sense/look good. Of course this is mainly due my my own skill, but you have to agree with me that perspective is hard!
• What have I learnt about myself through this module?
"A personal finding I had for myself is the fact that I quite enjoy the shading method from this artist and while replicating it. I might use this method of shading more in the future. This task also pushed me out of my comfort zone to try out different styles in drawing, to perhaps explore more artist's work and study their style. (It also pushed me to understand more about perspective, draw full body pose, and drawing. a. gun.)" - (from task 3's reflection)
• What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
A lot of my sketches have changed during the process because I just couldn't be satisfied, but the thing that has not changed is my determination to create something that I would like in the end. With how much I've struggled with the perspective, I still refuse to change it because -
1) I need to learn and understand it better.
2) I need to improve my art skills.
3) The final design would look cool and I will be satisfied with it if I push forward.
4) "It would look badass, trust me bro."
I am determined to perfect the sketch if that means I'll be satisfied with my work later. And so I did.
• What are my aspirations?
I hope to improve my art skill more by exploring and studying other artist's work. It isn't much but I also hope to be able to find more motivation and inspiration to draw more often, because it is here I found out how much I've missed rendering a full artwork.
