Self-Titled

We had to make a poster and animation to present who we are. To express one's self.

Process

- We were given a place to fill in the information about the poster.

Part 1

My name is Kong Ga Wai. I’m chill most times unless I’m under a lot of stress. I can also be short-tempered if someone were to piss me off. I’m very open about my feelings which sometimes I have to hide from other people because I can be too open with them.

What do I enjoy?
I enjoy playing games, drawing, and crocheting. I draw fanart of the characters from games I like and sometimes I will crochet some small plush toys/keychains.

Do I get motivated?
Motivation is something hard for me to get. I easily give up on things and I see no point in putting a lot of effort in it just to have them fail or not turn out how I would like it. I keep my standards low and mainly run on negative motivation. As long as I don’t have high hopes, I won’t feel as much as a failure if things turn out wrong.

The idea for the work:
I’m using a character from a game I like. I can relate with the character and to have a project based on them motivates me to work while also enjoying the progress. I had to cosplay as them for the photoshoot…

Part 2

The character I use for this work is Netzach from a game called Lobotomy Corporation. He is a character I like and can relate to. He has long green hair and brown eyes. He is the head of the Security Team (Safety Team Department).

About Netzach:
He once volunteered to participate in an experiment in the hopes of getting his close friend back, but the experiment failed, leading to his death. Netzach hated working for the corporation. Every day many people die and he feels hopeless and responsible for the deaths. He often drinks beer to get away from reality.

What is the concept?
In the game, every character will go through a “Meltdown” due to them breaking down. Netzach’s meltdown was that he overdosed on Enkephalin (a green type of drug to put it that way). He wants to take everyone down with him thus preventing anyone from healing. During the meltdown, he became a sort of tree-like entity.

The work will have two scenes. The first scene will be him lying on a pool of green substance closing his eyes to escape from reality. The second scene will be a “meltdown” scene with a red flashing warning light. Then it will loop back to the first scene as if nothing happened.

Poster
- After having a basic concept idea I start to sketch out the poster.

Animation
- Once the posters are done, I start to animate them.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Scene 1:
Netzach lays around drinking beer and getting high on Enkephalin (a drug) to escape the cruel working environment and the cruel fate of getting brought back to life.
[Although I don’t drink and get high on drugs, I can relate to him wanting to escape reality in any way. I either try to sleep my way through some hard days or just lock myself in my room and procrastinate my days away.]
Scene 2:
During Netzach’s core meltdown, he overdoses on Enkephalin to try to end his life while taking the whole corporation down with him. During the meltdown employees that are injured are not able to heal.
[Sometimes when things are going horrible, I do wish to never wake up again. But I try to find a will to live on, such as to live on for my family and friends, and “I’ve already achieved so much it would be a waste to throw them away just like that”. Similar to Netzach wanting to continue to live on after suppressing his meltdown.]

“For now, I will continue to live on and follow the play until the very end.”

Extra
- As you can see here I love this character. I would love info dump more about him and the whole game itself.
- Lobotomy Corporation is a management game where players have to manage employees around, have them work with abnormalities, and make sure they don't die.
- The soundtrack I used is from the game, it's called the "Third Waring" / "Third Trumpet". This soundtrack plays when every employee in the facility dies and the player would have to restart the day again.
- The main characters in the game have 2 forms. One is their human form and another is their Sephira form. (Though they are always in their Sephira form, there is a type of filter that makes the manager (the player) see them in their human form.) It is part of the lore itself whenever the player restarts the game/day.
- LobCorp Fun. 10/10. Good story. *Thumbs up*

REFLECTION

Out of all the projects, I look forward to this the most. Here I can make whatever I want and however I want. Here I can also express myself. At first I thought we had to take a photo of ourselves on a day-to-day basis, but then I heard we can dress up. Thus I took that option and decided to cosplay Netzach for this. After all, he is a character I can relate to. (HE JUST LIKE ME FOR REAL). Plus I hate having pictures of myself unless I'm in a cosplay.

Now to actually make it, the Photoshop process was smooth sailing with a little bump. But when it comes to After Effects I struggled a lot at first. If you look at the process screenshots you can see how messy the layers are, and don't be like me and not name the layers... It was... pain. But after finishing Scene 1 of the animation I learned a lot and eventually improved. There are other way better ways to do it but hey, "That is that, and this is this.".

In the end, I really liked how it turned out. I was a little skeptical in the process of whether it would turn out horribly or decent. But it was way better than I thought. It is exactly how I had imagined it.
