LECTURES

Week 6:

Letters

Maintaining x-height

- X-height is the size of the lowercase letterforms, curved strokes must rise above the median / sink bellow the baseline in order to appear to be the same size.

Form / Counterform

- Developing a sensitivity to the counterform, and often contained, by the strokes of the form. When letters are joined to form words, the counterform includes the space between them.
- How writers handle the counters when they set type determines how well word hang together.

- The examinations provide a good feel for how balance between form and counter is achieved and a palpable sense of letterform's unique characteristics.

Contrast

- Basic principles of graphic design apply directly to typography. Contrast is the more powerful dynamic in design.
- Simple contrast produces many variations: Small + Organic/Large + Machined; Small + Dark/Large Light.

Week 7:

Different Medium

- In the past, typography was viewed as living only when it reached paper. Once a publication was edited, typeset and printed, nothing will change after. Good typography and readability were the result of skilled typesetters and designers.

Print Type vs Screen Type

Type for Print

- Typeface was designed intended for reading from print long ago. Its the designer's job to ensure that the text is smooth, flowing and pleasant to read.
- Good typeface for print-Casion, Garamond, Baskerville are the most common typefaces that is used for print. Because of their characteristic of elegant and intellectual but also highly readable when set at a small font size.

Type for Screen

- Typeface intended for use on the web are optimized and often modified to enhance readability and performance onscreen in a variety of digital environment.
- This can include higher x-height, wider letterforms, more open counters, heavier thin strokes and serifs, reduce contrast, modified curves and angles for some design.
- Hyperlink is a word' phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to a new document or a new section. It is found in almost all Web pages, allowing people to click their way from page to another. (Hyperlinks are usually blue and underlined by default)
- 16 pix text on screen is about the same size on books or magazine. Font size are usually set at 10 points because we often are few inches away from the book.

Static vs Motion

- Static typography has minimal characteristic in expressing words. Characteristic such as bold and italic offer only a fraction of the expressive potential of dynamic properties.

- Temporal media offer typographers opportunities to 'dramatize' type, for letterform to become 'fluid' and 'kinetic'. Motion graphics, particularly the brand identities of film and television production companies, increasingly contain animated type.

- It is often overlaid onto music videos and advertisements, often set in motion following the rhythm of a soundtrack. On-screen typography has developed to become expressive, it must prepare the audience for the film by evoking a certain mood.

Task 2: Typographic Exploration & Communication

We have to express typographically the content given in a 2-page editorial spread.

Trials

For this assignment I kind of just jump in into laying out without much idea sketches.

First I put in the content given into InDesign to see how much the word will cover the page with the title I designed un Illustrator.

Design 1

I decided to put some curves to the corner of the letters.

After that I play around with what kind of layout I can arrange.

I decide to go with the second layout, but I felt that I should some design for the title.

UNITE design

Final

FEEDBACK

Week 6: No feedback given

Week 7: No feedback given

REFLECTION

This was a very short week compare to any other Task.

In this task I had check out other student's layout to get some inspiration. I had some struggle with coming up an layout idea for the paragraphs. My favourite part was 'visual a better world' design, I was able to come up with the idea of making it looking like an eye quite easily while I had no clue how to design 'Unite' until later days.
